Reading from modded game files

Using this method, you can read all Higurashi texts with replayable PS3-version audio files!

To start, you must have the 07th mod installed and then load your game files into your web browser. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Locate your “HigurashiEp0X_Data” folder inside your installation place.
    Assuming you installed the game with Steam you may find it under these locations:

    • Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Higurashi 01 - Onikakushi/HigurashiEp01_Data
    • Linux: /home/user/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Higurashi 01 - Onikakushi/HigurashiEp01_Data

  2. Press the “Load local game files…” button below and select the located “HigurashiEp0X_Data” folder and confirm the selection.

  3. You will be asked whether you trust this site to have access to all files inside the provided folder. Alternatively you might be asked whether you want to upload all files to this site. It is entirely safe to do so! You are not uploading any files, this website retains no information. Instead, you are only loading your game files into your browser, so they can be processed by this page’s JavaScript.

  4. If everything was successful, you can now select your desired episode with available audio. Enjoy!

Reading online with 07th-mod files

Using this method, you can read all Higurashi texts without needing to upload your game files.

The dialogue is extracted from the 07th-mod repository, allowing you to comfortably read it in your browser. However, with this method you will not have the option to listen and replay any of the PS3-version audio files. If you want to do so for listening immersion, please choose the other method.

• What is this?

This online tool extracts the text / dialogue content of the Higurashi visual novels and presents them in a highly accessible HTML format. The extracted texts can then be used to help the study of Japanese (or English) with the Higurashi games.

• How do I use the Higurashi extractor?

The intended use of this tool is to read the Higurashi novels while keeping the extracted text opened alongside to look up any unknown words with a third-party browser add-on like Rikaitan. You can also use Rikaitan in conjunction with its Anki integration to easily make vocabulary flashcards with Higurashi content.

The extracted audio files are supposed to be used for supplementary listening comprehension.

• I don’t want to install the 07th mod or upload my game files

It is not necessary to upload your files in order to use this tool. You can always use the option “Read online using 07th-mod without audio” which does not require anything from your end.

However, if you use this option, you will not have access to any audio files, which can greatly enhance your listening experience.

In case you are worried about “uploading” any files, be rest assured that you are not actually uploading them, but only loading them locally into your web browser which is entirely safe to do. (This website stores no information)

• I found a typo / grammar mistake

Any typo or grammar mistake (both English and Japanese) exists only because it also exists in the original game. The extractor only takes the game texts as it finds them and displays them so. In other words, I sadly cannot fix any “upstream” typo or grammar mistake.

• Some text is different or missing / there is text shown that is not in-game!

The text extractor works in conjunction with the 07th mod censorship level. This level causes different scenes of the game to be cut and also alters the dialogue in some scenes.

By default, the 07th mod and the extractor use a censorship level of 2. If you have changed your level in your game settings, you can also change it in the extractor next to the currently selected chapter. If you are not using the 07th mod, you may achieve the best results by setting the level to 0.

If no level setting fixes the issue, you may report it as a bug (see below).

• I think I found a bug
